  • We began our high school years with 324 members in the fall of 1961. We were down to 317 as Sophomore and 295 graduated on June 3, 1965.
  • The "Grape" and the "Eye" parties squared off in the Student Council Elections.
  • The award-winning LHS marching band performed at halftime of the CU-Oklahoma State football game.
  • The football team won eight straight games, finally losing to first place Poudre.
  • The Northern Conference named Frank Javernik "Coach of the Year" in his first season at LHS.
  • Dave Hoffman set a new state pole vaulting record of 14' 5 1/4".
  • Paul Salas was elected state DECA president.
     
Historical Highlights:
  • World population was 3.345 billion.  U.S. population was 194, 302, 963.
  • The average life expectancy was 70.2 years.
  • The violent crime rate was 24.5 per 1000 people.  The homicide rate was 5.5 per 100,000.
  • The first combat troops arrived in Vietnam.  By the end of the year, over 190,000 American soldiers, including some from the class of '65, were in Vietnam.
  • The Watts riots in Los Angeles broke out and 34 people died.
  • ABC paid an unprecedented $32 million for a four year contract with the NCAA to broadcast college football games on Saturday afternoons.
  • Bill Cosby became the first African American to star in a television show.
  • Sonny and Cher made their debut.
  • The newest dance craze was the Jerk.
  • "The Girl from Ipanema" was named Record of the Year at the Grammy's.
  • Other popular songs were "The In Crowd" by Petula Clark, "Wishin' and Hopin'" by Dusty Springfield, and "Stop! In the Name of Love" by the Supremes.
  • A first class stamp cost $.04.  Bread was $.19 a loaf, sugar was $.11 a pound, and best of all, gasoline was $.23 a gallon!
  • A medium Big Thompson Special was $1.25 at Santeramo's.  The large House Special was $3.00.
